Relationships between the Brain, Digestive System, and Eating Behavior: A Workshop

Completed

The Institute of Medicine’s Food Forum convened a 1 ½ day public workshop with the goal to better understand and gain cross-disciplinary perspectives on the current research in neurobiology, with a focus on the interaction between the brain, digestive system, and eating behavior.

Description

An ad hoc committee will plan and conduct a two-day public workshop that will explore the current state of knowledge regarding interactions between the brain, digestive system, and eating behavior. The workshop agenda will feature expert presentations and discussion that will review current knowledge on the relationship between the brain and eating behavior by exploring the interaction between the brain and the digestive system and what is known about the brain's role in eating patterns and consumer choice. Presenters will also evaluate the current methods used to determine the impact of food on brain activity and eating behavior, will identify gaps in current knowledge and will discuss potential theoretical frameworks for future research.

The committee will develop the workshop agenda, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. After the workshop, an individually-authored brief workshop summary and full workshop summary of the event will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
