Binbin Wang

Dr. Binbin Wang is an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Missouri. He received his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Subsequently, he was a postdoctoral fellow and a research scientist at Texas A&M University. Dr. Wang is currently serving as a member of the Fluid Dynamics Committee for the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Dr. Wang’s research is in a broad area of environmental fluid dynamics and addresses particle transport and fate in turbulent flows. His research particularly concerns the multiphase dynamics (e.g., gas leaking and oil spills) and its impact on transport and fate of hydrocarbon particles. Dr. Wang’s research group uses observations in laboratories and the field as well as modeling to understand the turbulence and particulate flows. He research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, United States Geological Survey, Department of Energy, and Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative.

Brendy Rincon Troconis

Prof. Rincon is an Assistant Professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department, as well as an adjunct professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). She earned her B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering with Summa Cum Laude honors from Universidad del Zulia in Venezuela and the M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University while working at the Fontana Corrosion Center. Prior to joining UTSA, she was a Research Associate at the Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia. Her work is focused on aqueous corrosion. Her research contributes to the advancement of safer energy production and/or transportation by generating knowledge that aids in technology advancement through materials selection/design (parameter optimization for additive manufactured alloys and heat treatment), inhibitor development, enhancement of surface treatments for coating adhesion, development of more resistant coatings (mechanically and electrochemically), and understanding of load/environmental effects on deterioration kinetics, among others. These contributions aim to decrease the failure risk of assets and protect our community and the environment. Any action increasing the life cycle of assets contributes to a decrease in failures and, therefore, safer energy production and transportation. Her work has been published in recognized journals such as Corrosion, Materials Science & Engineering: A, Scientific Reports, Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, Progress in Organic Coatings, Surface and Coatings Technology, and others. Prof. Rincon is also a wife and mother to three beautiful children who are 2, 3, and 6 years old.

Changwon Son

Dr. Changwon Son is an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, & Systems Engineering at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University and his M.S. in Safety Engineering from the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center at Texas A&M University. Before joining the graduate programs, he worked at a large shipbuilding company as a safety engineer who planned and executed various safety engineering improvements and worksite safety programs. His current research is focused on supporting human cognition and decision-making in the context of incidents and disasters. Specifically, he conducted several research projects on designing operating procedures to support human operators' adaptive behavior in the oil and gas industry and understanding dynamic interactions between emergency response team members during disaster responses. His long-term career goal is to address growing threats from disasters using innovative safety and human factors approaches and protect vulnerable communities that are impacted by the disasters. He serves as an editorial board member of the Human Factors in Healthcare journal and a reviewer for many occupational safety and health journals. He was selected as an Emerging Leader of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society in 2020 and a Young Talent of Resilience Engineering Association in 2017. He received the National Ergonomics Month Best Educational Resource for K-12 Award in 2020 and the Texas Safety Foundation Steve Halliburton HSE Scholarship in 2018. His research has been published in safety and health journals, such as Safety Science and the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Chao Sun

Dr. Chao Sun is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University (LSU). Before joining LSU, Dr. Sun worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Rice University and as a Senior Structural Engineer focusing on structural and hydrodynamics analysis of floating offshore platforms at Intecsea Worley Group. At LSU, Dr. Sun’s lab is dedicated to creating multi-hazard resilient and sustainable critical infrastructure (buildings, offshore wind turbines (OWTs), oil/gas pipelines, bridges, and electric power grids) facing extreme tropical cyclones and aging issues. On one hand, Dr. Sun and his coworkers are developing high-fidelity high-resolution computational fluid dynamics models to advance the fundamental understanding of coupled wind-surge-wave flow characteristics and impacts on coastal and offshore structures. On the other hand, three-dimensional mathematical models and effective dampers have been developed to simulate the complex dynamics and to prolong the service life of OWTs. Additionally, smart monitoring systems for oil/gas pipelines, OWTs, and bridges are under development using advanced signal processing, computer-vision techniques, and physics-guided machine learning. Dr. Sun has published over 65 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers/abstracts. He serves as the Associate Editor of Structural Control and Health Monitoring. He is a member of seven American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Engineering Mechanics Institute and Structural Engineering Institute committees. He is also the Faculty Advisor of the ASCE Student Chapter at LSU. He has received the ASCE Outstanding Educator Award and a Louisiana Sea Grant Fellowship. He received his B.S. from Shanghai Jiaotong University, M.S. from Tongji University, and Ph.D. from Rice University, all in Civil Engineering.

Chengcheng Tao

Dr. Chengcheng Tao is an Assistant Professor in the School of Construction Management Technology at Purdue University. Prior to joining Purdue, Dr. Tao worked as an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education postdoctoral research fellow at the U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) - National Energy Technology Laboratory. Dr. Tao’s research focuses on sustainable cementitious materials and manufacturing, oilwell cement rheology, gas migration control for improved wellbore integrity, hazard-resilient infrastructure (bridges and oil/gas pipelines), and artificial intelligence applications in civil engineering. She has developed a novel computational framework that optimizes cement production and hydration for improved material performance, offshore wellbore safety, sustainability, and cost. Her work has been published in recognized journals such as Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Construction and Building Materials, International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, and Progress in Organic Coatings. Dr. Tao received the American Chemical Society - Petroleum Research Fund’s Doctoral New Investigator Award in 2023, the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) Faculty Scholars Award in 2022, and the Outstanding Faculty in Discovery Award at Purdue University in 2023. Dr. Tao’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the American Concrete Institute, the American Chemical Society, the IISG, and the U.S. DOE. Dr. Tao earned her B.S. in Civil Engineering from Shanghai Normal University in Shanghai, China, M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, respectively, and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida.

Chungkuk Jin

Dr. Chungkuk Jin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences at Florida Institute of Technology. Dr. Jin’s research focuses on the development of digital twin models for offshore oil and gas platforms to assess structural and human safety. For that, he has developed a dynamics simulation tool that solves fluid-structure or fluid-elastic-structure interactions to address the dynamics of offshore oil and gas platforms, ocean infrastructures, and offshore renewable-energy devices. In addition, he has developed weather monitoring and prediction systems using sensor measurements. He has also focused on machine-learning applications to solve ocean-engineering problems, such as inverse current and wave estimation and failure and stress monitoring of floating structures using sensors. He has published over 90 journal papers and conference papers/abstracts and has served as Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member of five journals. Dr. Jin received the Best Paper Awards at the International Conference on Fluid Mechanics in 2020 and the Technical Conference at the Korean Institute of Bridge and Structural Engineers in 2023. He has completed 15 research projects, some of which are related to offshore safety sponsored by DeepStar Global Offshore Technology Development Consortium and ExxonMobil. Dr. Jin received his B.E. and M.E. in Marine System Engineering at Korea Maritime and Ocean University, his Ph.D. in Ocean Engineering at Texas A&M University, and received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award from Texas A&M University.

Cui Hantao

Dr. Hantao Cui is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on power system stability and dynamics, integration of onshore and offshore renewable energy, and highperformance computing. He is the author of the ANDES software for power system modeling and analysis. Dr. Cui is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award and was a runnerup in the American-Made Data-Driven Distributed Solar Visibility Prize. Prior to joining NC State, Dr. Cui was an assistant professor at Oklahoma State University from 2021 to 2024. Previously, he served as Chief Technologist of the CURENT Large-Scale Testbed(LTB), which won a 2020 R&D 100 Award. Currently, he serves as Chair of the IEEE Power & Energy Society Computer and Analytical Methods Subcommittee. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, following his M.S. and B.S. degrees in the same field from Southeast University, China.

Fanghui Deng

Dr. Fanghui Deng is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Houston. Her research focuses on using satellite and ground-based geodetic data to study surface and subsurface features and their changes, including in coastal regions, oil and gas fields, volcanoes, and earthquake zones. She aims to improve both natural and anthropogenic hazard assessment across various spatial and temporal scales. Currently, she is applying satellite radar images to measure subsidence along the Gulf Coast, including both onshore and offshore areas. Her pioneering work using satellite radar to measure deformation of offshore man-made structures at a regional scale has been published in Remote Sensing of Environment. Dr. Deng serves on the executive committee of the AGU Natural Hazards section. She holds a B.E. in Remote Sensing Science and Technology and an M.E. in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. She earned her Ph.D. in Geology from the University of South Florida with support from a NASA graduate fellowship.

Harish Krishnamoorthy

Dr. Harish Sarma Krishnamoorthy is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Houston (UH). His research interests relate to high-density power conversion for grid interface of energy systems, machine learning-based methods for improvement in quality and reliability of power electronics, advanced electronics, and control for mission-critical applications. Prior to joining the UH, he worked as an Electronics Engineer with GE Energy in Hyderabad, India, and received the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification there. He then went on to be an Electrical Engineer with Schlumberger in Sugar Land, TX. He has also worked with the R&D divisions of Ford and Google. Dr. Krishnamoorthy has over 85 journal/conference papers in refereed publications, one granted U.S. patent, and three U.S. patent applications. He has also co-authored a book chapter under the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and was the Chair of the IEEE Power Electronics Society Young Professionals committee in 2020-2021. He is also an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics. He is actively involved in the organizing committees of several IEEE conferences, including FEPPCON-2022, APEC-2023, and ECCE-2023. He received the UH Cullen College of Engineering’s Teaching Excellence Award in 2021 and the Research Excellence Award in 2022. He was also named an Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Emerging Leader by the OTC in 2022. Dr. Krishnamoorthy received his B.Tech. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the National Institute of Technology in Tiruchirappalli, India, and his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University.

Irfan Khan

Dr. Irfan Khan is an assistant professor at Marine Engineering Technology Department, Texas A&M University, Galveston (TAMUG). As the director of the Clean and Resilient Energy Systems (CARES) Lab at TAMUG, he mainly focuses on the control and reliable operation of clean energy resources along with an emphasis on energy systems resiliency. Following the same passion, Dr. Khan has developed an interest in offshore energy systems, working towards its safer, reliable, and efficient operation. Moreover, Dr. Khan also has a joint appointment with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Texas A&M University. In addition, he is an affiliate faculty member with the TAMU Energy Institute and the TEES Cyber Security Center. Dr. Khan’s academic credentials include a doctoral degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 2018, a double master's degree from Carnegie Mellon University and University of Greenwich, Chatham UK in 2011 and 2017, respectively. Before that, he received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan. Currently, Dr. Khan is leading a pre-eminent research team that includes a number of both undergraduate and graduate students and a couple of international visiting scholars, mainly targeting the cyber-physical security of offshore marine energy systems. Dr. Khan has more than 80 publications in his field. He is an IEEE senior member, a member of IEEE PES, IEEE IAS, IEEE IES, and SNAME. He is also the Vice-Chair for the IEEE Galveston Bay Section (GBS) and faculty advisor of SNAME and MTS.

James Thomas

Dr. James 'Chris' Thomas is an Assistant Research Professor in the J. Mike Walker ‘66 Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University (TAMU) in College Station. His research has focused on combustion; gas dynamics; propellants and energetics; explosions, detonations, and DDT; nanoscale particle synthesis strategies; and power storage and safety. His recent research emphases have included studies of Li-ion battery hazard experiments and modeling and consequence prediction of gas-phase detonations. He has authored over 100 papers in these areas, including 23 archival journal publications. Dr. Thomas is also an active member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Combustion Institute, the Institute for Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems, the American Institute of Chemical Engineering, and the Electrochemical Society. Dr. Thomas has held interim positions at NASA’s Johnson Space Center’s Propulsion and Power Division, The Aerospace Corporation’s Propulsion Science Department, and Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants’ Blast Effects Section. In addition, he has been a part of TAMU’s TEES Turbomachinery Laboratory since 2011. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D., all in Mechanical Engineering, from TAMU.

Jian (Jason) Shi

University of Houston

Dr. Jian Shi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Houston (UH). His research focuses on creating innovative engineering and technology solutions to facilitate a balanced and orderly energy transition. His research expertise includes deep decarbonization of the electric energy grid, low-/zero-carbon multi-energy hubs, maritime transportation electrification, energy equity and justice, and smart grid cybersecurity. Prior to joining UH, He was an Assistant Research Professor at the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems and an Adjunct Faculty at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Mississippi State University from 2015 to 2018. Dr. Shi has published over 35 peer-reviewed journal articles and 40 conference proceedings. He has received several awards, including the NSF CAREER Award (2024), UTC Emerging Leaders (Class of 2024), and Faculty Research Excellence Award at UH (2022). He received his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2014 from Mississippi State University.

Junbo Zhao

University of Connecticut
Dr. Junbo Zhao is the Castleman Term Assistant Professor in Engineering Innovation, and Director of DOE Northeast University Cybersecurity Center for Advanced and Resilient Energy Delivery (CyberCARED). He is also a Research Scientist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. He is currently the officer of multiple IEEE Power & Energy Society (IEEE PES) committees and subcommittees. His research interests are in power system modeling, estimation, security, dynamics and stability, uncertainty quantification, renewable energy integration and control, and machine learning. He has published 4 chapters and more than 200 peer-reviewed journals and conference papers. He is the recipient of multiple recognitions, such as the Best Paper Awards from the 2020 Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy, 2020-2024 IEEE PES General Meeting (9 papers), the 2021 and 2022 IEEE Transactions on Power Systems (3 papers), and 2022-2023 International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems, the 2020 and 2022 IEEE PES Chapter Outstanding Engineer Award, the 2022 and 2024 IEEE PES Technical Committee Working Group Recognition Award for Outstanding Technical Report (4 awards), the 2022 IEEE PES Outstanding Young Engineer Award (Society Level-one per year worldwide), the 2023 AAUP Research Excellence Award-Early Career, the 2023 IEEE PES Technical Committee Prize Paper Award, the 2023 IEEE PES Working Group Recognition Award (Society Level), and the 2024 IEEE PES Technical Committee Distinguished Individual Service Award. He received his BS in Electrical Engineering from Southwest Jiaotong University and his PhD from the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech in 2018.

Kai Gong

Dr. Kai Gong is an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University. His research lies at the intersection of materials science, civil engineering, environmental sustainability, and data science. He leads the Sustainable Infrastructure Materials Group, which focuses on addressing fundamental challenges in building materials, particularly emerging cement and concrete technologies, with the goal of advancing a more durable, sustainable, and resilient built environment. To achieve this, his group integrates (i)computational simulations and (ii) advanced experimental characterization with (iii) materials informatics and data-driven modeling. His research has been recognized with multiple honors, including the 2021 Le Chatelier Medal from Cement and Concrete Research and the 2024 Giatec Best Paper Award in Sustainability and Construction. Prior to joining Rice, he conducted his postdoctoral research at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University and in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned his Ph.D. joint in Civil & Environmental Engineering and Materials Science at Princeton University, an M.Sc.Eng. and B.S. in Civil Engineering from Monash University, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Central South University.

Kandaswamy Aiyer Aditya

Dr. Aditya Aiyer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Lehigh University. He leads the Multiscale Fluid Dynamics and Turbulence Laboratory, where his group employs theoretical analysis, high-fidelity numerical simulations, and advanced modeling techniques to investigate a broad range of problems in environmental turbulent flows. His research covers topics in air-sea interaction, offshore renewable energy systems, and particle transport processes. Before joining Lehigh, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University. Dr. Aiyer’s work has appeared in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physical Review Fluids, and the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, where his doctoral research focused on the role of microscale droplet dynamics and oceanic turbulence in influencing the fate of oil released during deepwater spills.

Leixin Ma

Arizona State University

Dr. Leixin Ma is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering program at Arizona State University. Her research expertise includes fluid-structure interaction of offshore structures and machine learning-assisted simulation and inverse design. Dr. Ma's research goal is to combine data-driven and physics-based approaches to develop digital twins that reduce and prevent environmentally induced damage to offshore structures, ranging from renewable energy systems to offshore aquaculture systems. She was previously a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UCLA, and her previous research has influenced the development of Shear7, one of the leading software tools in the offshore industry for predicting Vortex-Induced Vibration. She currently serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Ocean Engineering and Marine Energy. She actively organizes the "Digitalization, AI/ML, Neural Networks, and Digital Twin" session at the International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. Her research has been featured in the Physics of Fluids Journal. In 2023, her research team received the American-Made Water Prize from the Department of Energy. Dr. Ma received her BSc in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2015, and both her SM and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in 2017 and 2021, respectively.

Liang Du

Dr. Liang Du is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Temple University. Since joining Temple, Dr. Du has been mentoring 8 Ph.D. students, including 3 female and 1 DoD SMART Scholar, 1 joint master thesis with Lund University, Sweden, and 18 undergraduate researchers, including 1 from Universidade de Brasilia, Brazil, and 1 from Tsinghua University, China. His research focuses on electric power grid modernization, energy systems integration, de-centralized and autonomous power architectures, data-driven analytics, and renewable integration. Prior to joining Temple, he was an Electrical Engineer with Schlumberger in Sugar Land, TX, and played a leading role in the design and commercialization of the world’s first fully electrified and automated hydraulic fracking fleets. Dr. Du received the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities in 2018 and serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications and IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification. He won an IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PES GM) 2021 Best Paper on Bulk Power Generation and Transmission and a PES GM 2022 Best Paper on Power System Modeling and Analysis. He contributes to the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community by serving its IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo since 2018 as panel chair, publication chair, co-program chair, and treasurer, and he is projected to be the general chair in 2025. He received his B.Eng. in Automation from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, M.Eng. in Aerospace Engineering, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. He was a Research Intern at Eaton Corp. Innovation Center (Milwaukee, WI), Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (Cambridge, MA), and Philips Research N.A. (Briarcliff Manor, NY) in 2011, 2012, and 2013, respectively.

Maryam Tabibzadeh

Dr. Maryam Tabibzadeh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management at the California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Her research has been focused on risk analysis in complex safety-critical and technology-intensive industries, such as the offshore drilling sector. Investigating the role of human and organizational factors (HOFs) along with technological elements in those industries has been a major focus of her research projects. For instance, she has developed (both qualitative and quantitative) risk assessment methodologies to analyze the critical role of HOFs in the safety of offshore drilling operations, with an emphasis on the negative pressure test as a primary method to ascertain well integrity. Dr. Tabibzadeh has presented and published papers in the areas of risk assessment and safety management, accident investigation and prevention, and interoperability analysis of multiple emergency response agencies in peer-reviewed conferences and journals. She has also supervised more than 30 students in different research projects. As part of her accomplishments, she received the Distinguished Engineering Educator Award in 2022 and the Outstanding Engineering Achievement Merit Award in 2018 from The Engineers’ Council. She was the College of Engineering and Computer Science’s Research Fellow in 2021-2022 and the Easton Foundation Faculty Fellow in 2019-2020. Dr. Tabibzadeh received her B.S. and first M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering, from the Sharif University of Technology in Iran and her second M.S. degree in Operations Research Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC). She also received her Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from USC.
