Technology Transfer Training Program - Opening Workshop

The Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) is working collaboratively with the National Academies of Sciences and the Science, Technology and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF) to bring technology transfer training to Egypt.

The AUTM Essentials of Academic Technology Transfer Course builds the fundamental skills and resources necessary to evaluate inventions and negotiate license agreements. The sessions are designed to follow the full lifecycle of the invention, patenting and licensing process: evaluation of invention disclosures, triage, patenting, IP marketing, valuation, and license negotiation to established companies and start-ups. The Essentials Course uses a mix of instruction, case discussions and small-group interactions to maximize useful learning and networking opportunities.

In a bid to boost science and technology innovation in Egypt, the Innovate Egypt Program held a series of workshops and events from July 16 to 18 at Innovation Hub at Ain Shams University, fostering early-stage innovation and commercialization. More than 20 Egyptian research and science teams were selected to participate in the program, embarking on a transformative journey to take their ideas from lab to market.

The program, which was implemented by VentureWell and the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF) as part of the U.S.-Egypt Science and Technology Joint Fund, aims to support and strengthen the country's budding innovation ecosystem. Egyptian teams of science experts, entrepreneurs, and mentors gathered for their second workshop alongside U.S. trainers and mentors. This collaboration allowed them to refine their startup ideas, polish their pitches, and gain valuable insights to propel their products toward successful commercialization.

In a notable addition to the program, an investor training component was introduced for the first time, with the objective of enlightening Egyptian investors about untapped opportunities in science and technology-based ventures. Twenty Egyptian investors enthusiastically participated in the training, delving into the intricacies of investing in science-based ventures.

The highlight of the event was the pitch presentation held on July 18, where the top ten Innovator teams from Egypt's research community showcased their projects in front of an international jury. This panel included representatives from the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United States Embassy in Egypt, and investors from the United Kingdom and the United States. The pitching session provided an excellent platform for innovators to garner feedback and potential support for their innovative ideas.

Innovate Egypt: Closing Workshop and Pitch Day

In a bid to boost science and technology innovation in Egypt, the Innovate Egypt Program held a series of workshops and events from July 16 to 18 at Innovation Hub at Ain Shams University, fostering early-stage innovation and commercialization. More than 20 Egyptian research and science teams were selected to participate in the program, embarking on a transformative journey to take their ideas from lab to market.

The program, which was implemented by VentureWell and the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF) as part of the U.S.-Egypt Science and Technology Joint Fund, aims to support and strengthen the country's budding innovation ecosystem. Egyptian teams of science experts, entrepreneurs, and mentors gathered for their second workshop alongside U.S. trainers and mentors. This collaboration allowed them to refine their startup ideas, polish their pitches, and gain valuable insights to propel their products toward successful commercialization.

In a notable addition to the program, an investor training component was introduced for the first time, with the objective of enlightening Egyptian investors about untapped opportunities in science and technology-based ventures. Twenty Egyptian investors enthusiastically participated in the training, delving into the intricacies of investing in science-based ventures.

The highlight of the event was the pitch presentation held on July 18, where the top ten Innovator teams from Egypt's research community showcased their projects in front of an international jury. This panel included representatives from the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United States Embassy in Egypt, and investors from the United Kingdom and the United States. The pitching session provided an excellent platform for innovators to garner feedback and potential support for their innovative ideas.

A two-day event in December 2016 presented models of successful innovation in developing countries and engendered discussion on how to meet the circumstances unique to Egypt. Organized by the innovation non-profit, VentureWell, expert speakers convened to present on innovation-related topics such as technology transfer, commercialization, incubation, and entrepreneurial capacity building in science and technology.
Alumni of the U.S. - Egypt S&T Joint Fund provided input on their research under the program and its connection to commercialization efforts. Members of the Egyptian science and technology community from a wide variety of organizations took part in working groups organized along particular themes. This helped spark ideas for successful commercialization in Egypt.
