Behavioral Economics and the Promotion of Health Among Aging Populations: A Workshop

An ad hoc committee will organize an open, two-day workshop to discuss behavioral economics research with the goal of extending the research to be of benefit to older populations. Specifically, there will be a focus on considering interventions that could generate long term benefits in areas such as (1) decreasing sedentary behavior; (2) promoting volunteering and social engagement; (3) reducing inappropriate use of opioids and using opioids when medically necessary; and (4) improving medical regimen adherence.

An ad hoc committee will organize an open, two-day workshop to discuss behavioral economics research with the goal of extending the research to be of benefit to older populations. Specifically, there will be a focus on considering interventions that could generate long term benefits in areas such as (1) decreasing sedentary behavior; (2) promoting volunteering and social engagement; (3) reducing inappropriate use of opioids and using opioids when medically necessary; and (4) improving medical regimen adherence. Additionally, ideas about modifications that might be required to make interventions “work” in middle-aged or older adults will be included in the workshop. A brief proceedings of the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
