In our final seminar, we reflect on the important conversations of the first three events, while centering our discussion on how we can inspire change moving forward. The conversation will focus on identifying the different scales and sectors where change needs to occur and how we as individuals and a larger community can make change happen.

How can we transform undergraduate STEM education so that it is able to meet the needs of students, science, and society in 2040?

The third seminar in our series will focus on creating learning experiences grounded in real-world elements and opportunities. Presentations from students and educators–as well as contributions from participants–will provide examples of diverse student learning experiences that leverage lived experience, and how we can design authentic experiences for undergraduates to prepare problem solvers, leaders, and innovators to tackle the multi-faceted problems facing our world. We will also discuss approaches to design accessible and engaging real-world student experiences on our campuses.

What do changes in the population, goals, and pathways of undergraduate STEM students mean for educators and leaders of undergraduate institutions?

Join us as we continue to discuss the future of undergraduate STEM education, in 2040 and beyond. These seminars will allow for active participation of all attendees as they listen to short presentations and discuss in-depth their own ideas for creating student-centered learning experiences; appropriate uses of technology in undergraduate STEM education; equity, inclusion, access, and flexibility in undergraduate education; and real-world learning experiences inside and outside the classroom.

The second seminar in our series will focus on ways technology could improve undergraduate STEM education. Presentations from students and educators will explore how to weave effective and innovative approaches to technology into undergraduate STEM education. All participants will have a chance to share their own ideas and react to the ideas presented as we consider the decision-making process around using technology for education on our campuses.

A public symposium was held on November 12, 13, and 19, 2020. Click here for the Symposium website

With sponsorship from the National Science Foundation, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is exploring ambitions for the future of undergraduate STEM education, including how we can transform undergraduate STEM education to meet the needs of students, science, and society.

The symposium brought together innovators from a diverse range of colleges and universities together with policy makers, funders, and representatives from associations and industry. Participants were able to share their own ideas about the future of undergraduate STEM education. You can read some of the stories they wrote about 2040 in the attachments below. Two commissioned papers prepared in advance of the symposium are also available here.
