The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report Call to Action for Science Education: Building Opportunity for the Future outlines action steps different stakeholders can take for a better, more equitable science education, which includes documenting and tracking progress and data that inform decision making. (More details can be found in the report and in the quote from Recommendations #7 and #8 below.)

The workshop will be held virtually on January 6th. This workshop will focus on ways to use data to map opportunity and anchor decisions that can improve equitable access to science learning. Panelists will provide examples of how they analyze and use data and discuss ways that analyzing data can help advance equity goals.

“Recommendation 7: States should develop and implement data driven state-level plans for providing equitable K-16 STEM education with specific attention to science. These plans should include “STEM Opportunity Maps” that document and track where opportunities are available, where there are disparities in opportunity, and how much progress is being made toward eliminating disparities and achieving the goals of the state STEM education plan. The STEM Opportunity Maps should incorporate documentation from local and regional Alliances for STEM Opportunity.

Recommendation 8: The federal government should develop an annual “STEM Opportunity in the States” report card that documents the status of K-16 STEM education across each of the states and territories and tracks equity of opportunity for students in science and the other STEM disciplines.”

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report Call to Action for Science Education: Building Opportunity for the Future elevates a role for regional and state alliances as a tool for advancing and improving science education for K-12 and undergraduate students, with the goal of creating a more informed citizenry and increasing opportunities for all interested people to join the STEM workforce. (More details can be found in the report and in the quote from Recommendation #5 below.)

A virtual workshop was held on July 14th from 11-3pm ET to talk in more detail about forming and sustaining Alliances for STEM Opportunity. The workshop highlighted examples of productive alliances and discussed numerous issues that can contribute to the success of alliances, such as agreeing on shared goals and building trust in relationships.

The workshop agenda, biographies of the speakers, a recording of the workshop, and slides showing examples of existing partnerships, alliances, and ecosystems will be posted below.

“Recommendation 5: Leaders of local and regional K-12 systems and post-secondary institutions should work together to form Alliances for STEM Opportunity that involve key stakeholders in STEM education, such as informal education organizations, nonprofits, afterschool and summer programs, business and industry, and the philanthropic sector.

Each alliance should develop an evidence-based vision and plan for improving STEM education that includes specific attention to high-quality science learning opportunities and addresses disparities in opportunity.

Plans should include, at minimum, strategies for:

providing access to high-quality science learning experiences across K-16 and addressing existing disparities in access;
providing high-quality instructional materials and other resources to support these experiences;
building a high-quality, diverse workforce for teaching science to include provisions for professional development and ongoing support;
creating pathways for learners in science across grades 6 through 16 with supports for learners who want to pursue STEM careers.”

Science is an essential tool for solving the greatest problems of our time and understanding the world around us. Scientific thinking and understanding are essential for all people navigating the world, not just for scientists and other STEM professionals. The Call to Action for Science Education: Building Opportunity for the Future articulates priorities and makes recommendations to state and national level policy makers on how they can elevate science education opportunities so that they are equitable and high quality. It builds on decades of research and dozens of previous reports that have examined the evidence on learning and teaching in K-12 schools and postsecondary institutions. Members of the committee who wrote the report will give an overview of the key issues, priorities, and recommendations.
