Please join us for a 1-hour public webinar to discuss the findings of this new report. Dr. Shirley Pomponi of the Florida Atlantic University and Dr. James P. Collins of the Arizona State University, co-chairs of the report committee, will present brief highlights of the report recommendations. Following the presentation, Pamela Soltis of the University of Florida, Manzour Hazbon of the American Type Culture Collection, and George Matsumoto of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, three members of the report consensus committee, will join the co-chairs to answer questions from webinar registrants.

Biographies

Prof. Rachel A. Ankeny is Professor of History and Philosophy and Deputy Dean (Research) at the University of Adelaide, and an Honorary Visiting Professor in the College of Social Science and International Studies (Philosophy) at the University of Exeter (UK).
She is an interdisciplinary teacher and scholar whose areas of expertise cross several fields including history/philosophy of science, and bioethics and science policy, and she serves on several national committees and working groups associated with science policy issues. Her major ongoing projects include the Australian Research Council sponsored Organisms and Us: How Living Things Help Us to Understand Our World which is a comprehensive historical and philosophical exploration of the changing roles and understandings of research with organisms in 20th and early 21st-century science, including practices in museums and other collections. She also has long-standing research on norms and practices in contemporary molecular biology, especially the Bermuda Principles for data sharing.

Prof. Sabina Leonelli is a Professor in Philosophy and History of Science at the University of Exeter, where she co-directs the Centre for the Study of the Life Sciences (Egenis), and a Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute in London. Her research, currently supported by the European Research Council, UKRI, the Turing and the Australian Research Council, concerns the methods, infrastructures and assumptions involved in the use of big data for discovery, the role of the open science movement within current landscapes of knowledge production and the status and history of organisms as scientific models and data sources. She is particularly interested in archival and classificatory practices in biology, and the intersection between the digital and the material in the curation of data and specimens. Leonelli’s publications span the fields of philosophy, social science, biology, history, data science, and science policy, and include the award-winning book Data-Centric Biology: A Philosophical Study (2016). She works closely with the European Commission on the development and implementation of Open Science policies.
