Addressing Disinformation about Biological Threats Through Scientific Collaboration and Communication

Completed

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) is conducting a series of meetings with U.S.-based scientists from various disciplines. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss how scientists can work together to identify and address inaccurate and misleading scientific information about biological threats. Participants will explore mis- or disinformation can be addressed through scientific analysis and/or peer review, the expertise needed to address particular information, and approaches and audiences for correcting inaccurate and misleading information. The overall goal is to develop a trusted network of qualified scientists who can and are equipped to address inaccurate information.

Description

NASEM will build on the outcomes of the Addressing Inaccurate and Misleading Information about Biological Threats through Scientific Collaboration and Communication in Southeast Asia study by conducting a series of meetings of experts after the public release of the consensus study report. The meetings of experts will aim to advance U.S. scientists’ interest in and knowledge of countering dis- and misinformation claims related to biothreats. The meetings will include scientists in the United States, U.S. government and non-governmental security experts, representatives of online data-sharing or analytic platforms, and other experts as appropriate. The objectives of these meetings are to discuss: a) threats associated with dis- and misinformation; b) the primary outcomes of the ongoing study and opportunities for scientist involvement in addressing such claims; and c) the guide for identifying and addressing false claims.
