Electric power is essential for the lives and livelihoods of all Americans, and the need for electricity that is safe, clean, affordable, and reliable will only grow in the decades to come. At the request of Congress and the Department of Energy, the National Academies convened a committee of experts to undertake a comprehensive evaluation of the U.S. grid and how it how it might evolve in response to changes in demand, new energy sources, and future innovation.

The Future of Electric Power in the United States, a new report launched on February 25, presents an extensive set of policy and funding recommendations aimed at modernizing the U.S. electric system. The report addresses technology development, operations, grid architectures, and business practices, as well as ways to make the electricity system secure, sustainable, equitable, and resilient. During the public briefing webinar, the committee presented key findings and recommendations in the report.

The Committee on the Future of Electric Power in the US will meet in open session with the four federal Power Marketing Administrations (PMAs) - Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), Southeastern Power Administration (SEPA), and Southwestern Power Administration (SWPA). The PMAs operate electric systems and sell the electrical output of federally owned and operated hydroelectric dams in 34 states. The PMAs will present to the committee and will have time for committee Q&A. Public log-in information to come.

The second committee meeting featured an open session on August 14, 2019 from 2-3pm ET where the committee will hear from Tom Wilson of the Electric Power Research Institute regarding Project 2X, a U.S.-focused initiative working across economic sectors to decrease CO2 emissions twofold by 2030 and incentivize R&D advancements to further dramatically lower emissions by 2050.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is launching a study to advise the nation on strategies for modernizing the U.S. electricity system. The committee of experts will focus on new technologies, operating techniques, grid architectures, and business models for modernizing the grid given a range of potential future scenarios in both the medium and long term. During the open session of Meeting 1, the committee heard from several applied energy offices at DOE. Presentations highlighted priorities and goals for the study, as well as related DOE research programs relevant for this study.
