Gulf Research Program Awards Over $1.4 Million to Build Resilience in Gulf Coast Communities

News Release

The Gulf Research Program (GRP) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine today announced an award of more than $1.43 million to support 15 collaborations from Houston, Texas, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama, in the planning of science-based and community-driven projects that advance disaster adaptation at the local level.

Two decades ago, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, submerging a major American city, claiming nearly 1,400 lives, and displacing one million people. The storm was a turning point in how the nation understands the risks of extreme weather and the urgency of disaster preparedness. As we mark this anniversary, we carry forward the lessons of Katrina to ensure communities are better prepared for the challenges of today and tomorrow.
