The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene an ad hoc committee of experts to assess NIH research activities on autoimmune diseases with a particular emphasis on the risk factors, diagnostic tools, barriers to diagnoses, treatments, and prospects for cures. The analysis will consider occurrence of multiple autoimmune diseases and the interplay of the diseases with comorbidities. The committee will identify barriers to NIH-sponsored research, research gaps, and promising areas for future NIH-sponsored research that would benefit the greatest need.
