About

The Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) was convened in 1940 in response to a request from the U.S. National Defense Advisory Commission to the National Academy of Sciences for aid in studying problems of nutrition in the U.S. Today the FNB is the focal point for activities of the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies concerned with food, nutrition, and food safety and their roles in health maintenance and disease prevention. Now approaching its 80th year, the FNB has continued to grow and expand its reach both domestically and internationally, providing visionary leadership across a range of nutrition and food science issues toward the improvement of human health. A symposium with invited speakers was held to highlight the work of the FNB in providing leadership in nutrition and food science, exploring safety and adequacy in the food supply, and advising the government on nutrition and food policy. Participants will dialogue with speakers about challenges facing the board and how to leverage those challenges into future directions.
