BACKGROUND

Psychiatric illnesses - such as major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, substance abuse disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - are widely prevalent and represent a significant health care burden worldwide. Nearly one in five Americans live with a diagnosed mental illness. Yet unfortunately, conventional medications for mental illnesses often fail to adequately relieve patients of disruptive and disabling symptoms.
While it has long been known that psychedelics (e.g., lysergic acid diethylamide [LSD], and psilocybin) and entactogens (e.g., 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, [MDMA]) can facilitate profound and persistent changes in cognitive, sensory, and psychoemotional states, interest in the evidence that psychedelics and entactogens may be tools to alleviate mental illness is seeing a renaissance of interest by investigators, clinicians, drug developers, and patient advocates over recent years.

With activity and interest in this field continuing to grow, this workshop will provide a venue to explore strategies for harnessing the potential of these agents to combat mental illness. Invited speakers will discuss the neurobiology of the therapeutic effects, strategies for optimizing the safety, efficacy, and patient stratification, and lessons learned that may help the identification of new classes of therapeutic agents. Furthermore, the workshop will explore the unique challenges and considerations presented by compounds that induce profound changes in consciousness - including those related to clinical trial design, medical ethics, and the psychosocial contexts of drug administration.
