Approaches to Address Unmet Research Needs in Traumatic Brain Injury Among Older Adults: A Workshop

Recently completed

A committee-supported project or activity that has been completed and for which output dissemination has begun. Its committee has been disbanded and closeout procedures are underway.

About 1 in 50 older adults suffer a TBI each year, largely due to falls. Although TBI is a major cause of disability for geriatric patients, evidence-based care guidance is hampered by knowledge gaps about clinically relevant differences in TBI injury, recovery, and outcomes in this age group. This one-day public workshop, led by the Forum on TBI in collaboration with the Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders and the Forum on Aging, Disability, and Independence, will address the under-representation of older adults in TBI research and explore new approaches for supporting the translation of knowledge-to-practice.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and conduct a one-day public workshop to explore unmet research needs in traumatic brain injury (TBI) among adults 65 years and older. Invited presentations and discussions may be designed to:

  • Discuss what is known about the incidence of TBI among older adults and reasons behind the dearth of research in this age group.
  • Explore critical research gaps regarding post-TBI recovery in older adults, including the existence of diverse clinical phenotypes with different symptom trajectories, comorbidities, and polypharmacy.
  • Consider approaches to address the under-representation of older adults in clinical research and datasets for TBI.
  • Discuss how to translate emerging clinical research into more robust guidance for TBI treatment and management among older adults.

The planning committee will organize the workshop, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate or identify moderators for the discussions. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
