On April 9, 2015, the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement held a workshop in in Washington, DC to explore how modeling can inform strategies to improve population health. Modeling is a formal (e.g., mathematical) representation of ideas for the purpose problem-solving and different modeling techniques (such as statistical approaches or more complex computational models) can be used to represent those ideas depending on the problem to be solved.

The day included dialogue between modelers from a range of disciplines and model users with a focus on making practical contributions to move modeling forward in population health at the local, state, and federal levels, including strategies to build capacity for modeling. Workshop objectives included:

(1) Identify how modeling could inform population health decision makers’ strategies and decision making based on lessons learned from models that have been (or not been) used successfully
(2) Identify opportunities and barriers to incorporating models into decision-making
(3) Identify data needs and opportunities to leverage existing data and collect new data for modeling
