Space Security Working Group

In progress

Any project, supported or not by a committee, that is currently being worked on or is considered active, and will have an end date.

CISAC’s Space Security Working Group addresses cyber issues that affect U.S. strategic security relationships by engaging space security experts in other countries. The participants also address preservation of space as a global resource for humanity. These bilateral discussions focus on technical aspects of security, and seek to inform policymakers, promote mutual understanding, offer policy options, and lay the foundations for cooperation, where appropriate. Topics include space policy and actions with security implications, the intersection of space-related capabilities and vulnerabilities with other domains such as nuclear, cyber, conventional military, artificial intelligence in military systems, and critical infrastructure.

Description

The Space Security Working Group of the National Academies Committee on International Security and Arms Control (CISAC) engages through the CISAC dialogues with space experts in other countries to address issues that affect the strategic security relationships between the United States and other nations. The participants also address preservation of space as a global resource for humanity. The discussions include space policy and actions with security implications, the intersection of space-related capabilities and vulnerabilities with other domains such as nuclear, cyber, conventional military, artificial intelligence in military systems, and critical infrastructure. As in other aspects of the CISAC dialogues, CISAC utilizes the unique status of the Academies to make progress on difficult security issues at and often beyond the frontiers of what nations are able to explore on a government-to-government basis. CISAC focuses on technical aspects of security, and seeks to inform policymakers, promote mutual understanding, offer policy options, and lay the foundations for cooperation, where appropriate.
