On February 19 and February 21, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a virtual meeting of experts and discussed the landscape of and gaps in research on the environmental impacts of scientific research.
Description
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a meeting of experts to understand the environmental impacts of scientific research. The meeting will focus on broad areas of fundamental scientific research supported by the federal government. Impacts to be considered include the consumption of natural resources such as energy, materials, and water, the production of waste, heat, and greenhouse gas, etc., and disturbances to ecosystems. The meeting will explore impacts through three potential approaches: (1) research infrastructures such as large-scale or smaller-scale research facilities or laboratory activities in universities or institutions, (2) scientific and engineering disciplines, and (3) cross-disciplinary issues like travel to scientific conferences and the use of computing resources. The meeting discussion will focus on scoping the landscape of and gaps in the research on environmental impacts of research.
