The Big Data Revolution: What Does It Mean for Research?

Completed

The advent and pervasive nature of big data and what it means for science is being realized every day. This meeting focused on how big data is changing the way we do science, looking particularly at the challenges of working with and analyzing big data sets, ethics and privacy concerns, workforce and training issues, and opportunities for public-private partnerships. While acknowledgement was made to the technical side of big data, the discussion focused primarily on the role and impact of big data in scholarly research.

Description

An ad hoc committee will organize a public workshop on big data and its use by and impact on the research enterprise. The workshop will focus on how big data is changing the way we do science, touching on the challenges of working with and analyzing big data sets, ethical and privacy concerns, workforce and training issues, and opportunities for public-private partnerships. The workshop will acknowledge the technical side of big data, highlighting, for example, the NRC report on Frontiers in Massive Data Analysis and other relevant NRC work; however, it will focus primarily on the role and impact of big data in scholarly research. A brief, individually-authored workshop summary by a designated rapporteur will be issued in accordance with institutional guidelines.
