Countering Zoonotic Spillover of High Consequence Pathogens (HCP): Workshop Series

Recently completed

A committee-supported project or activity that has been completed and for which output dissemination has begun. Its committee has been disbanded and closeout procedures are underway.

NASEM will work with partner organizations in key countries to organize a series of workshops to explore ways to help prevent and mitigate the consequences of the zoonotic spillover originating in the live animal supply chain that involve the overlap between high-risk wildlife, other animal species, and humans.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), in collaboration with the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) and partner organizations in key countries, will organize a series of workshops to explore ways to help prevent and mitigate the consequences of the zoonotic spillover originating in the live animal supply chain that involve the overlap between high-risk wildlife, other animal species, and humans. In preparation for the workshops, the committee will commission papers on improving biosafety and biosecurity within animal supply chains that involve the intersection of people and high-risk wildlife and animal species for discussion at the workshops. The workshops will be designed to explore the spillover of High Consequence Pathogens (HCPs) originating in the supply chain of animals, increase the understanding of the essential elements and barriers to reducing the risks from HCPs, identify best practice measures to prevent HCP outbreaks, and engage experts and responsible parties who regulate or otherwise influence the management and operation of the animal supply chain. Following the workshops, NASEM staff will assist the INGSA in generating a guidebook on countering zoonotic spillover of HCPs. The guidebook and derived material will be published by the INGSA. NASEM staff will also assist partner organizations to tailor aspects of the guidebook to meet country needs and circumstances for use in the field.
