Join the Roundtable on Black Men and Black Women in Science, Engineering and Medicine for the next public workshop examining the academic programs and environments necessary to increase the number of Black people entering and succeeding in applied, translational, and technology-focused doctoral programs and careers in life sciences, engineering and medicine. In addition, the workshop will explore the history of inventorship and entrepreneurship in the Black community, identify the variables that have led to individual achievement, and spotlight existing programs that have demonstrated success in seeding and cultivating skills in innovation and entrepreneurship throughout Black communities.
Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a public workshop examining the academic programs and environments necessary to increase the number of Black people entering and succeeding in applied, translational, and technology-focused doctoral programs and careers in life sciences, engineering and medicine. In addition, the workshop will explore the history of inventorship and entrepreneurship in the Black community, identify the variables that have led to individual achievement, and spotlight existing programs that have demonstrated success in seeding and cultivating skills in innovation and entrepreneurship throughout Black communities.
Major objectives of the workshop include:
- Examine successful frameworks in academia and industry to recruit and retain Black people in applied, translational, and technology-focused doctoral programs.
- Explore the history of Black people as inventors and entrepreneurs in science, engineering, and medicine, and
- Discuss programs with demonstrated success to encourage and support Black inventors and entrepreneurs.
Following the workshop, rapporteur-authored workshop proceedings will be published.
