Measuring Progress towards Sustainability: The State of the Science on Indicators and Metrics of Sustainability: Workshop Discussions at the Science and Technology for Sustainability Roundtable

Completed

As the first event of the Roundtable's 2015-2016 initiative, the June 2015 meeting hosted a session that provided an overview of the state of the science on sustainability indicators and metrics in the context of climate change and infrastructure vulnerability. The second event of the Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability's 2015-2016 initiative, the November 2015 meeting featured discussions on social and economic indicators and metrics in the context of urban sustainability.

Description

An ad hoc committee under the auspices of the Science and Technology for Sustainability (STS) Program will plan two workshop events focusing on issues related to sustainability indicators and metrics. The workshops will be held in conjunction with the June and November 2015 meetings of the STS Roundtable and are designed to be synergistic with a separately funded and closely related NRC Workshop on the Transition toward Sustainability after 15 Years planned for Summer 2015. The June workshop will draw upon studies completed by the STS Program in the last two years and will bring ideas forward to be considered at the summer NRC Workshop. The November workshop will harvest output from the summer workshop and ensure a continuing path forward for useful results. Connectivity and coordination between these two workshop events and the summer NRC Workshop will be accomplished by overlap in leadership of the two planning committees.
The June and November workshop events will feature invited presentations and discussion and will focus on the following tasks:

  • Providing an overview of the state of the science on sustainability indicators and metrics, focusing on examples developed over the 15 years of the Roundtable's existence, as well as those currently in use that address various aspects of sustainability;
  • Discussing what indicators and metrics have been found to be the most useful for promoting sustainability;
  • Examining examples of select sustainability indicators and metrics that integrate across various disciplines and sectors and are being used to inform policy and action related to sustainability practice and research; and
  • Identifying knowledge gaps related to the development of effective and innovative sustainability indicators, including factors considered to be important to the success of indicators in various sectors.

Each event will focus on sustainability metrics in specific contexts, such as coastal resilience and infrastructure vulnerability.
Brief, rapporteur-authored summaries of the events will be prepared and distributed broadly to interested parties.
