Chinese Institutions for Grassland Studies
Part III contains brief descriptions of 22 scientific institutions—research institutes, university departments, government agencies, and field stations—that are devoted to the study of the grasslands of northern China. The descriptions are based on site visits by two delegations of the Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People's Republic of China (CSCPRC), in September 1990 and June 1991; on written and oral information provided by Chinese scholars and administrators at these institutions; and on published sources. In all but a few cases, the institute director, department chairman, station chief, or other responsible official has reviewed, corrected, and amended a preliminary draft of the description of his unit. The National Academy of Sciences panel responsible for this report also reviewed Part III and offered suggestions for improving it, but here, as in the literature reviews in Part II, statements made by Chinese informants are presented as accurately as possible and without comment. The presentation is organized geographically, beginning with Beijing, then proceeding from east to west—the Northeast, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai, and Xinjiang.
