Letter to the Sponsor

Dear Dr. Davis:

The Standing Committee for the Review of the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) Framework (standing committee) was asked by its sponsors to review the DRI framework, structure, and process relevant to future DRI reviews. I am writing in response to questions posed in open sessions, held February 24 and April 8, 2022, with the standing committee by the Federal DRI Joint U.S.–Canadian Working Group (working group) and the Committee to Review DRIs for Energy (DRI committee) related to determining a definition for the appropriate population to be considered for dietary intake recommendations for the United States and Canada and related questions. The standing committee has discussed six questions posed by the working group and six questions posed by the DRI committee. In this letter report we provide a high-level summary of our consensus opinion on these questions. The committee’s intent was to provide overarching responses that could apply across future DRI reviews as well as the current review. Differences in the application of the standing
