Statement of Task
The original Acquisition Strategies for Future Space-Based Optics study had a classified and an unclassified statement of task. The unclassified version omitted details regarding the specific programs under review by the study committee due to their classification level. The unclassified statement of task is provided below for reference.
The Academies shall convene an ad hoc committee of experts to evaluate and respond to the following questions:
- Are the current technology investments in space-based optics adequate to ensure these technologies are mature enough to be considered for next generation architecture, and if not, what additional measures are required to assure an informed decision?
- Are the current technology demonstration projects sufficient to both reduce risk for insertion of future technologies and to provide a mechanism to more efficiently transition future technologies?
- What opportunities exist to better inform future technology development and/or transition decisions?
To accomplish the statement of task, a committee was appointed that includes expertise in industry, academia, and/or government with knowledge about space-based optical systems, including planned technology investments of current programs, risk reduction for future systems, feasibility of inserting future optics into next generation platforms, and opportunities to inform future research directions.
