Appendix A

Statement of Task

A planning committee appointed by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will plan and host a 1.5-day public workshop that will explore opportunities to enhance collaboration and communication among clinicians in different disciplines and medical specialties who provide care for patients with cancer, from diagnosis through survivorship. The workshop will feature invited presentations and panel discussions on topics that may include

  • Opportunities for collaboration and information-sharing among members of a patient’s health care team across clinical specialties (e.g., oncology, primary care, cardiology, endocrinology, rehabilitation, and others) to identify best practices for care coordination and workforce utilization.
  • Approaches to enhance care competencies for patients with cancer across the spectrum of non-oncology clinicians.
  • Payment and care delivery models to facilitate care coordination and collaboration among oncology, primary care, and other disciplines and medical specialties.
  • Strategies to expand and strengthen the workforce to improve equitable access to high-quality care for patients living with and beyond cancer, particularly in rural and other underserved areas.
  • Opportunities to strengthen the evidence base about the array of adverse effects of cancer and cancer treatment on patient outcomes, including the impact on multiple organ systems—as well as interventions aimed at

  • mitigating the adverse effects—through improved surveillance activities for patients diagnosed with cancer.

The planning committee will develop the agenda for the workshop sessions, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
