Documentation of Effective Practices, Challenges, and Needs: Web-Based Knowledge Library
The objective of Phase II of the research was to make the relevant knowledge, effective practices, emerging practices, use cases, datasets, tools, lessons learned, and opportunities discovered in Phase I available in an easy-to-use, web-based format. To this end, the team created a centralized, searchable, relationally linked, web-based resource library in which to document the knowledge and resources to support advancement of data sharing, integration, and management by transportation agencies. The team worked with TRB staff, members of the panel, and various committees to determine the best home for the website. In the end, the National Operations Center of Excellence (NOCoE) offered to host the website, which can be visited at https://data.transportationops.org/.
Figure 3-1 shows a screenshot of the home page of the website for NCHRP Project 08-119. The contents of the website are categorized in three cross-linked sections, shown across the top of the page (circled in Figure 3-1 for emphasis):
- Data Application Areas,
- Research Products, and
- Additional Resources.
The Data Application Areas tab contains the information and resources discovered in Phase I of the research. The information and resources are generally organized by the 10 use case categories discussed in Chapter 2 (shown in the drop-down list in Figure 3-2). Within each data application area, the user will find challenges related to data sharing, integration, and management as well as links to relevant resources (e.g., reports, guides), data standards and specifications, datasets, and frameworks.
The Research Products tab provides an overview of each of the 11 research products as well as links to the full research products provided in Part II of this Research Report.
The Additional Resources tab provides information and links to relevant resources. These resources are organized into 10 categories, as shown in the drop-down list in Figure 3-3. While some of these resources are also referenced under the specific data application areas (i.e., those identified in the Phase I research), many of the resources made available here are provided for further information for the user, as identified during the development of the website in Phase II.
It should be noted that the development of the NCHRP 08-119 website was completed in July 2021 and was not subsequently updated following the development of the research products in Phase III.
