APPENDIX C

Case Example Questions

Telephone interviews with the case example DOTs began with the following questions. Responses often led to discussion of additional topics.

  1. Describe your current procedures for maintaining wide cracks and joints, in terms of the following:

Specifications, Special Provisions, Manuals of Practice, Other

    Materials used

Locations used (geographic/environmental region, functional classification or traffic level

    Step-by-step procedures)

  2. How did you develop your approach and have your procedures evolved over time? What have you learned about these crack sealing procedures and materials? Are there “lessons learned” from your experience?
  3. What innovations apply to your wide joint and crack sealing practices?
  4. Did you use trials, test sections, laboratory studies or other explorations to evaluate materials or procedures prior to full adoption?
  5. Quantify the extent to which you do these repairs annually (amount spent, treated miles, or other).
  6. How long do these repairs last? What different conditions affect performance?
  7. Under what conditions are these repairs no longer effective?
  8. What is done when these repairs are no longer effective (i.e., what is the next strategy?)
  9. What challenges do you face with your current practices for wide crack and joint maintenance?
  10. Do you have an example project to discuss or provide that covers the process of project selection, treatment construction, and performance?
  11. Is there any ongoing monitoring of these specific types of repairs? Are there written reports or other documentation of wide crack and joint maintenance activities?
  12. What future research or additional information would help your practices for maintaining wide cracks and joints in asphalt pavements?
