Computer Science and Telecommunications Board

National Research Council

2101 Constitution Avenue, N.W. Washington, DC 20418

Dear Members of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board:

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board on its 10th anniversary. I regret that other Academy commitments prevent me from welcoming you here today.

This symposium is a fitting way for the Board to celebrate 10 years of outstanding contributions to computer science, computing technology, and telecommunications. The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Research Council are very proud of CSTB's achievements. The Board has acquired an outstanding reputation for its timely. relevant, and cogent work, completing more than 40 projects over the past decade. Several of its reports have a remarkably broad and enduring appeal. Personally, I have very much enjoyed reading Realizing the Information Future and The Unpredictable Certainty, and I have benefited greatly from some of the new knowledge that I have gained.

We live in an exciting, revolutionary time, and the next 10 years are likely to be even more productive for the Board and its staff. Computing and communications are changing the landscape dramatically in ways that affect every business, school, home, and citizen in the nation. CSTB and its expert committees will be challenged to respond to the needs of sponsors in search of answers to social and technological issues that could have broad ramifications for the public. In addition, CSTB must continue its tradition of generating its own project ideas that lead the nation in important directions.

On behalf of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and the National Research Council, I want to thank all former and current Board and committee members for their contributions to the growth and development of CSTB. In addition, accolades are due to the current Board Chair, Bill Wulf, and to the fine staff who have been essential to the Board's many accomplishments.

My congratulations to all associated with this fine endeavor. I hope that you enjoy this 10th Anniversary Symposium. Like me, I know that you look forward to another decade of exciting challenges for the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board.

Sincerely,

BRUCE ALBERTS

PRESIDENT, NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES CHAIRMAN, NRC GOVERNING BOARD
