Appendix A Mandate from Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act

Authorizing Legislation:

Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (16 U.S.C. 1801 et seq.):

SEC. 210. REVIEW OF NORTHEAST FISHERY STOCK ASSESSMENTS.

The National Academy of Sciences, in consultation with regionally recognized fishery experts, shall conduct a peer review of Canadian and U.S. stock assessments, information collection methodologies, biological assumptions and projections, and other relevant scientific information used as the basis for conservation and management in the Northeast multispecies fishery. The National Academy of Sciences shall submit the results of such review to the Congress and the Secretary of Commerce no later than March 1, 1997.*

Due to the timing of the 1997 stock assessment process (Figure 1.5), and delays in funding, it was agreed that the deadline for the completion of the report would be extended.
