Artificial intelligence is rapidly redefining the way healthcare professionals create, interpret, and evaluate medical records. In clinical practice, AI tools now assist with symptom assessment, imaging analysis, predictive diagnostics, and automated documentation — capabilities that have the potential to improve efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility. Concurrently, these technologies are transforming how medical evidence is reviewed for Social Security disability evaluations, creating both opportunities and challenges for quality assurance, error reduction, and fraud prevention. As adoption expands, it is critical for clinicians, informaticians, policymakers, and evaluators to understand AI’s impact on the integrity of medical documentation and the decision-making processes it informs. Artificial Intelligence and the Medical Record in the Context of Social Security Disability Evaluations: A Workshop will explore the latest developments in AI as it pertains to medical care and the current and upcoming implementations of AI systems or software that create, modify, edit, or otherwise interact with medical or health records. The workshop will include presentations with a focus on how AI may impact the information contained in medical records received by SSA for the purposes of disability evaluation, and how SSA might identify and accurately consider such information.

This National Academies workshop gathers stakeholders to explore how changes in Graduate Medical Education (GME)—including policy reforms, improved data collection, and outcome reporting—can enhance patient access to care (with an emphasis on primary care). The event responds to longstanding issues in the GME system: outdated funding models, insufficient outcome measurement, misaligned financial incentives, and limited national workforce planning, all of which may contribute to physician shortages and poor geographic distribution. Growing national interest and calls for reform have intensified as recent studies highlight the need for better data, accountability, and evidence-based approaches in both federal and state level GME policies. Collaborative efforts—especially among primary care advocates—aim to use data and collective action for more effective GME financing and distribution to better meet the health needs of the nation.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare has been growing rapidly in recent years. It is increasingly recognized for its transformative potential in healthcare, particularly in oncology. This workshop will examine the current and potential future uses of AI in cancer care, and ways to anticipate and address challenges related to integration of these technologies in the care of patients with cancer. With a focus on the responsible and effective use of AI in oncology, the hybrid workshop will consider current policy initiatives across healthcare and the unique needs for oncology care.

Housing is a key driver of health, influencing stability, safety, and opportunity. This one-day public workshop will explore how housing insecurity, affordability, quality, and neighborhood factors shape health outcomes, particularly for low-income and underserved populations. Panels may examine policy tools including housing vouchers, rent stabilization, and low-income housing tax credits; regulations such as zoning and building standards; and emerging strategies such as community land trusts and health-oriented design in affordable housing. Speakers will also discuss growing threats to housing stability, including the financialization of housing and private equity investment.
