The third and final webinar in this three-part series will explore strategies for attracting and preparing the next generation of professionals in research administration and compliance—key roles that support the ethical and responsible care and use of animals in research.

Panelists will discuss how institutions can engage undergraduate students, trade-school and community college students, and early-career professionals by raising awareness of career opportunities in animal research oversight and compliance. The conversation will highlight practical approaches to identifying and promoting internship, volunteer, and professional development opportunities that introduce students and early-career individuals to these vital aspects of the research enterprise.

Drawing from real-world examples, panelists will share insights on how students discover and access these opportunities, and how organizations can make pathways into compliance and research administration more visible, inclusive, and rewarding. The discussion will also touch on how established employees can continue to grow through mentorship and ongoing professional development.

The webinar will include Q&A, offering participants the opportunity to engage with panelists about actionable strategies for building awareness, accessibility, and sustainability of career pathways in research administration and compliance involving the care and use of animals.

The second webinar in this three-part series will focus on the importance of cultivating a culture of care—a holistic approach that emphasizes the well-being of both animals and the professionals who care for them. Panelists will discuss how organizations can foster environments where staff feel valued, supported, and motivated to build long-term careers in animal care and related fields.

Drawing on real-world experiences and workforce data, the discussions will highlight strategies for retaining animal care professionals, from showing new hires that their organization is invested in both people and animals, to creating clear career pathways that allow staff to grow from entry-level positions to roles of greater responsibility. The overall goal of the Fall 2025 board meeting of the Board on Life Sciences (BLS) was to understand future opportunities and needs for using AI and other computational tools for scientific discovery in the life sciences and biotechnology, including improving and validating models, designing experimental approaches for generating data, and sustaining digital biological datasets.

On October 30, the Board on Life Sciences will discussed on the use of artificial intelligence in the life sciences and biotechnology, specifically focusing on current capabilities, trends, and opportunities for accelerating discovery and knew knowledge about biological molecules and systems, design of experimental systems to generate data to inform model development and data analyses, and risks, implications, and sustainability of biological databases.

Session Descriptions

AI as a Discovery and Design Multiplier

This discussion will focus on current capabilities, trends, and opportunities for accelerating discovery and new knowledge about biological molecules and systems.

In Silico – Experimental Feedback Loop: Experimental Systems for Verifying and Improving Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Biological Tools

This discussion will focus exploring the feedback between using AI-enabled biological tools and developing experimental systems for generating the data to validate the outputs of the tools and for improving the design and analytic capabilities of the tools for life sciences research.

Existing and AI-Ready Biological Datasets: Current Threats and Future Opportunities

This discussion will focus on AI-ready data infrastructure, specifically generating and sustaining AI-ready biological datasets and converting existing biological datasets for use in AI models to address research, health, economic growth, and other objectives.
