Collaborative for Advancing Science Teaching and Learning in K-12

The Collaborative for Advancing Science Teaching and Learning in K-12 (CASTL-K12) brings together a diverse cadre of invested cross-sector organizations to collaboratively work toward and share targeted, evidence-based action to support equitable implementation of Framework-inspired state-level science standards.

In progress

Any project, supported or not by a committee, that is currently being worked on or is considered active, and will have an end date.

Description

The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine will establish an Action Collaborative within which science education stakeholders at the national and state levels will develop evidence-based policies and practices for implementing and supporting state-level science standards, based on A Framework for K-12 Science Education. The activities of the collaborative will be supported by professional staff of the Board on Science Education and will leverage the infrastructure of the National Academies. The Action Collaborative will pursue four primary goals:

  1. develop a coherent strategy for supporting implementation of science standards across states and districts,
  2. launch and coordinate a networked community of practice for stakeholders at all levels and across sectors,
  3. build on and share existing evidence-based policies, tools, and examples, and
  4. develop a coherent communication and engagement strategy for advancing K-12 science and engineering education broadly.

Specifically, the Action Collaborative will:

  • Hold meetings for Action Collaborative members to learn from each other as well as from experts and key stakeholders, and to develop coordinated action plans.
  • Convene and hold public workshops involving key stakeholders, and experts for the purpose of sharing and advancing innovative ideas and successful practices for implementing the vision of the A Framework for K-12 Science Education (Framework).
  • Facilitate and organize working groups that produce publications for the broader science and engineering and education community.
  • Publicly share practices, resources, tools, research, and lessons learned from the work of the Action Collaborative members, researchers, and other organizations.
