Applying a One Health approach requires collaboration at multiple levels to address complex challenges. Actors, such as government agencies, non-government and private entities, citizens, and the research community must have reason to believe that they will receive benefits and credit for data shared without threat of retaliation, exploitation, or misapplication. Trust enables the free flow of information and resources between stakeholders and fosters an environment where groups can unite towards a common goal. Without trust, efforts to tackle these challenges become fragmented and inefficient. In this webinar, invited speakers will share how their successful One Health programs establish and maintain trust, thereby supporting innovative solutions that no single discipline could achieve alone.

Data is at the heart of our ability to innovate and build effective solutions to the complex problems of today. From epidemiological data capturing disease patterns in populations to environmental data reflecting changes in land use and climate, each type of data offers unique insights that are crucial for a holistic understanding of health ecosystems. These data streams exist within a complex and fragmented landscape of technical, organizational, structural, and policy-related challenges. From incompatible data formats and storage silos to compliance complexities, data issues are often barriers to One Health collaboration. Climate Change is fundamentally a One Health issue. It is a multifaceted crisis with complexities spanning biological, environmental, and anthropological boundaries. Severe weather events and abnormal temperatures associated with climate change can cause shifts in wildlife and plant populations, affect human and animal health, and destabilize food systems, with ripple effects that threaten community cohesion and global health security. These are not isolated events but are profoundly interconnected issues that require a unified approach to understand and manage effectively. By promoting collaborative efforts that span various disciplines—integrating data from environmental and plant science, veterinary and human medicine, and socioeconomics—a One Health framework allows us to create a comprehensive understanding of these dynamic interactions. In this webinar, invited speakers will share One Health efforts that demonstrate the integration crucial for developing effective strategies that address the wide-reaching effects of climate change.

Data sharing is critical for evidence-based decision making for health security and resilience. The One Health approach, which is founded on the interconnectedness of human, plant, animal, and environmental health, demonstrates the need for data sharing and cross-disciplinary interoperability. Barriers such as incompatible data and systems, lack of interdisciplinary coordination, and lack of enabling policies limit data sharing capacity in the U.S. and globally, hindering progress toward health security. This first instalment in a webinar series hosted by the Forum on Microbial Threats will present a call to action for advancing data sharing through a One Health lens. Speakers will identify barriers as well as success stories, spur information exchange, and highlight potential future actions.
