National Cancer Policy Forum

The National Cancer Policy Forum serves as a trusted venue to identify high-priority policy issues in cancer research and care and to work collaboratively to examine those issues through convening activities focused on opportunities for action. The Forum addresses policy issues relevant to the goal of reducing the cancer burden through basic, clinical, and translational research; prevention; and by improving the care and outcomes for those diagnosed with cancer. Forum activities inform the cancer community and the public about critical policy issues through workshops and published reports.

Improving Support for Family Caregivers

Feature Story

Roughly 53 million people in the U.S. provide care to a family member such as a child with complex medical needs, an aging parent, or a spouse who is seriously ill. A recent workshop explored how to better support them by offering respite, integrating their needs and knowledge into health care systems, and lightening financial burdens.

Cancer care is particularly complex in the age of COVID-19, said panelists during a July 13 and 14 National Academies webinar, Opportunities and Challenges for Using Digital Health Applications in Oncology. It involves a spectrum of services — including screening, diagnostics, surgery, radiation, palliative care, and survivorship care.
