The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Aligning Incentives for Open Scholarship convened a half-day hybrid public workshop, Developing New Approaches to Promote Equitable and Inclusive Implementation of Open Scholarship Policies on October 19 from 9 am to 2:30 pm EDT. The workshop was held in conjunction with the Fall 2023 meeting of the Roundtable.
The workshop explored specific steps and new approaches that research institutions, governmental agencies, research funders and other organizations can take to promote equitable and inclusive implementation of policies and practices being developed in response to the August 2022 memorandum of the Office of Science and Technology Policy on Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research. The discussion was built on a June 2023 workshop that explored the implications of new policies for various stakeholders.

U.S. Research Data Summit

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine appointed the U.S. Research Data Summit Planning Committee, under the auspices of the U.S. National Committee for CODATA, Board on International Scientific Organizations, to convene U.S. leaders of research data organizations across sectors who can shape and influence U.S. research data policies and practices.

The objectives of the convening are to:

increase coherence of interests and activities among the cross-sector research data organizations
increase communication and collaboration across sectors on shared priorities,
reduce duplication of effort, and
position the United States to be well-represented in international discussions on research data.

Summit invitees include research data organization leaders in academia, government, industry, and related nonprofits who can effect change in the near future.

The Summit outcomes will reflect the experience, knowledge, discussion, recommendations, and commitment to the objectives of the participating leaders. They will be informed by the results of focus groups with experts convened by the US Research Data Planning Committee from April - July 2023. The focus groups covered six prioritized topics: Cross-Sector Access to Research Data; Data for Disruption: Responding to Disasters and Shocks in Disadvantaged Communities; Data Needs for Decarbonization; Indigenous Data Governance; Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Research Data Integration; and Organizational Approaches to AI Inputs and Outputs. The topics were selected based on input from the 2022 survey by the Association of Research Libraries and the U.S. National Committee for CODATA, discussions with the U.S. National Committee for CODATA, and refinement by the U.S. Research Data Summit Planning Committee.

The Summit proceedings in brief will be shared with the public.

The Board on Research Data and Information (BRDI) convened a meeting on April 20-21, 2023. This will was a hybrid event, with in-person component held in Washington, DC.
On April 20, a half-day public workshop, Accelerating and Deepening Approaches to FAIR Data Sharing featured invited presentations and discussions on new approaches that research funders, research institutions, researchers, scientific societies, and other stakeholders are taking to facilitate and encourage sharing of FAIR (findable-accessible-interoperable-reusable) research data within and across disciplines.
During the afternoon of April 20, BRDI members heard from stakeholders and other experts about their current activities and priorities in the areas of data sharing and open scholarship.

On May 12, 2022, the Committee on Realizing Opportunities for Advanced and Automated Workflows in Scientific Research, led by Chair Daniel Atkins (NAE, University of Michigan), shared a summary of the newly-published, Automated Research Workflows For Accelerated Discovery Closing the Knowledge Discovery Loop, followed by a panel to discuss implications and opportunities associated with the report. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Aligning Incentives for Open Science hosted a public release of Developing a Toolkit for Fostering Open Science Practices: Proceedings of a Workshop on Thursday, September 30, 2021 from 3:30-4:30 pm EDT. A recording of the session can be accessed below.
The publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the virtual workshop held on November 5, 2020 that explored the information and resource needs of researchers, research institutions, research funders, professional societies, and other stakeholders interested in fostering open science practices. The proceedings includes examples of toolkit elements that have been developed by members of working groups of the Roundtable on Aligning Incentives for Open Science. The toolkit is primarily intended to assist university leadership, academic department chairs, research funders, learned societies, and government agencies for aligning incentives for open science.
The public release event highlighted the value of an open science toolkit, National Academies engagement with open science, and an overview of the toolkit elements, followed by brief case studies presented by members of the community that show how the toolkit can be adapted and adopted.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a virtual public workshop, Data-Informed Societies Achieving Sustainability: Tasks for the Global Scientific, Engineering, and Medical Communities on September 9 and 10, 2021.

The workshop explored how the global scientific, engineering, and medical communities could better facilitate the effective use of data to advance sustainability in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The workshop also discussed crosscutting issues, such as strengthening the engagement of scientific, engineering, and medical communities in efforts to shape the post-2030 agenda on data-related issues, addressing disparities in the ability of societies to utilize data, and highlighting insights and lessons learned from global experience with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The workshop brought together participants from governments, the private sector, academia, and nongovernmental and international organizations involved in data and the SDGs. The workshop was jointly organized by the National Academies Board on Research Data and Information (BRDI) and Science and Technology for Sustainability Program (STS), and supported by the George and Cynthia Mitchell Endowment for Sustainability Science and Schmidt Futures as part of BRDI core activities.

Members were provided with updates on current BRDI projects, including the Roundtable on Aligning Incentives for Open Science and a consensus study on Realizing Opportunities for Advanced and Automated Workflows in Scientific Research. Representatives from governments and nongovernmental organization spoke to BRDI regarding their current priorities and challenges related to research data and information. A Roundtable discussion with BRDI members and participants explored organizational priorities and how BRDI might contribute to addressing them, as well as suggestions for future topics and potential board activities relating to open science and research data and information.
