IVO Hosts Webinar on Experiences of Applying for Visa as a Scientist

In September 2024, the Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) commissioned KGL Consulting to conduct a global survey of scientists, engineers, and medical professionals. The survey aimed to gather insights into their experiences applying for U.S. visas for short-term scientific visits, including B-1, F, J-1, and H-1 visas. On April 3rd, the BISO hosted a webinar titled 'Experiences of Applying for Visa as a Scientist' which provided an overview of the findings from over 1,200 respondents across more than 90 countries.The talk featured: Dr. Padmanabhan Seshaiyer, BISO Chair; Dr. Sekazi Mtingwa, BISO Member; Annette Hager, KGL Consulting; Ehud Keinan, President, International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).View the recording here.

Updated Tip sheet for US-based Psychology Journals

This document includes key suggestions from participants at a June 2021 workshop for psychological science journal editors about how to increase international perspectives in U.S.-based psychology journals. The workshop was organized by the U.S. National Committee for Psychological Science of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Board on International Scientific Organizations Global Visa Survey

In September 2024, the Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) commissioned KGL Consulting to conduct a global survey of scientists, engineers, and medical professionals. The survey aimed to gather insights into their experiences applying for U.S. visas for short-term scientific visits, including B-1, F, J-1, and H-1 visas. This report presents the findings from over 1,200 respondents across more than 90 countries. Please read the report here.

Call for proposals to host the 21st U.S. National Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the meeting to be held in summer 2030

The U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM) is soliciting proposals from institutions wishing to host the 2030 U.S. National Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. Every four years since 1950, the U.S. has hosted a National Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in order to foster and promote the exchange of ideas and information among the various disciplines within the mechanics community, and to chart future priorities in mechanics-related research, applications and education. The Congresses cover a broad range of topic areas in mechanics and are well attended by mechanicians from both industry and academia. Please find the full PDF that lists proposal requirements, venue expectations and details the timeline of the proposal which has a deadline of March 20, 2025.The 2026 U.S. National Congress will be in Los Angeles, CA from June 21-24, 2026. It is being collaboratively hosted by Caltech, UCLA, and USC. If your institution is interested in hosting the Congress, please contact Tom Pence, Secretary of the USNC/TAM and chair of the site selection subcommittee, for information on developing your proposal (pence@egr.msu.edu). The USNC/TAM is eager to work with interested parties during proposal development. 26th General Meeting of the ICO 2024

The 26th General Meeting of the 2024 International Commission on Optics (ICO) met in Cape Town, South Africa on Monday Oct. 21 through Thursday Oct. 24, 2024. Around 200 scientists from around the world with backgrounds in optics and photonics gathered for a variety of lectures from technical discussions to global policy issues. Assembly members spoke of better connecting ICO projects to Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) following a session discussing the connections to optics and photonics. There was also discussion on leveraging the committees to perform outreach to listen to priorities and needs from different regions for optics and photonics. The conclusion of the general assembly resulted in unanimous election of the new leadership board which includes Dr. Kent Choquette (U.S.) as Treasurer of ICO. The general assembly also accepted Chinas bid to host the next General Meeting of ICO in 2027.

Apply for the 74th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting dedicated to Chemistry June 29 - July 4, 2025

The National Academy of Sciences is happy to partner in a pilot initiative with the Lindau Nobel Annual Meeting. The NAS offers offering a pre-selection mechanism for attending the 74th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting dedicated to Chemistry scheduled to be held in Lindau, Germany from June 29 to July 4, 2025. The application is open until Sunday, October 13, 2024. The Lindau Nobel Laureate meeting brings together about 40 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry and some 600 highly talented undergraduate, master and doctoral students and early-career postdoctoral scientists in the field of Chemistry and closely related disciplines. These students and early career scientists will have the opportunity to share their research with laureates, attend Nobel Laureates lectures, and build connections and mentoring relationships with international experts and top talent from around the world. The final selection of applicants will be carried out by the organizers of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. Travel and meeting expenses of the selected applicants will be covered by the meeting organizers. Please fill out the pre-selection application by Sunday, October 13th, by 11:59 PM. Apply today

International Congress of Mathematicians 2026*

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) will be held July 23-30, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At its meeting in Helsinki, Finland, in July 2022, the 19th IMU General Assembly voted to accept the bid from the United States of America to host ICM 2026 and the 20th IMU General Assembly, with Philadelphia as venue for the ICM and New York City for the General Assembly. The congress coincides with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 40th anniversary of the last ICM was held in the U.S. The ICM offers a rare opportunity to meet some of the world's leading mathematicians and be inspired by the vast diversity of today’s mathematics. Many USNC/M members were instrumental in the bid of the ICM and continue to be engaged in the planning of the conference. Learn more at the International Mathematical Union website.

Editorial on Science in Exile

SEED Advisory Committee member Gary Machlis and Senior Director of the SEED program, Franklin Carrero-Martinez, have published an editorial in Science to raise awareness and encourage more support for scientists in exile. The full article is available here.

Global Assessment of Scientists in Exile

On May 14 and 15, 2024, a Symposium on "Scientists in Exile", organized by Clemson University, was held as a SEED-related activity at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The Symposium was held to share knowledge and insights to help guide the proposed Global Assessment of Scientists in Exile which aims to address the need for systematic and comprehensive data on scientists in exile. Like thousands of other Ukrainian researchers, Olena Poliarus was forced to flee Ukraine with her two children when the war began. In this short film, she shares her poignant story about relocating to Poland to continue her work -- with support from a U.S. National Academy of Sciences grant program.

2023 Young Scientists Summer Program Awards Announced

IIASA announced the 2023 Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) awards to three exceptional young scientists. Gaurav Ganti, Lucas Vivier, and Huiying Ye will receive grants allowing them to return to IIASA and continue their research collaborations for three additional months. Gaurav Ganti from the Humboldt University of Berlin received the Peccei Award for his work with the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE). Ganti’s YSSP project on ““Pathways to Inform the Equitable Implementation of the Paris Agreement”” was prepared under the supervision of IIASA researchers Setu Pelz and Matthew Gidden Lucas Vivier from the Centre International Recherche sur l'Environnement et le Développement (CIRED) near Paris was awarded the Levien Award for his work with the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program on “Decarbonizing the EU Residential Sector: A Modelling Assessment of Current Policies and Future Strategies”. Huiying Ye from the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was awarded the Mikhalevich Award for her work, with the Advancing Systems Analysis (ASA) Program for her project “Linking R&D Investment to Emission Reduction Cooperation: Overcoming Free-Riding While Achieving Deep De-Carbonization ”. Lightsources for Africa, the Americas, Asia, Middle East, and Pacific (LAAAMP)

Crystallography is a cross-disciplinary field so it is not surprising to see physicists, chemists, biologists, geologists, and even engineers using crystallography to advance their respective fields. Sekazi K. Mtingwa (Nuclear Regulatory Commission), member of BISO and the USNC/Physics has been instrumental in the transformation of scientific capacity and capability in developing nations through the Advanced Light Source initiative called Lightsources for Africa, the Americas, Asia, Middle East, and Pacific (LAAAMP). This initiative is the largest collaboration supported by private funding that also demonstrates the positive impact of the collaboration between two scientific unions, International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) and the physics union (IUPAP) along with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics. IIASA Offers Inaugural Summer School on Systems Modeling

IIASA will offer, for the first time, a Summer School on Systems Modeling (15-26th July 2024). The two-week school is designed for Master’s, PhD and post-doctoral researchers who wish to use or develop models broadly related to the sustainability agenda. The goal is to equip participants with a solid understanding of modeling practices and limitations of models. Many examples will be taken from IIASA’s portfolio of tools and methods, ranging from ecological models, socio-economic systems, to integrated assessment tools of energy, air, water, biodiversity, and food. Applicants are asked for a succinct motivation statement, and should have some quantitative skills including some knowledge of scientific programming. Successful applicants will be notified by 3 May. The National Academies has a limited number of fellowships, funded by the National Science Foundation, to support fees, travel and living expenses for successful applicants who are U.S. citizens or are enrolled in U.S. graduate programs. 2-Week hands-on course, 15-26 JulyApply by 24 April The U.S. Committee for IIASA at the National Academy of Sciences will host an Online Information Session on Friday, April 5, at 11:00 a.m. EDT for potential candidates.

Event - IUCR Congress 2026

The 2026 IUCr Congress in Calgary Canada will be jointly hosted by the U.S. National Committee for Crystallography, the Canadian National Committee for Crystallography, and the American Crystallographic Association. It will held at new BMO Convention Center at Stampede Park, home to one of the world’s largest rodeo festivals, which draws over a million visitors each year. The next Congress will be the 27th and will be held 11–18 August 2026. Learn more about the Congress at its website.

2024 ACA Summer Course

Applications are now open for the 2024 American Crystallographic Association Summer Course to be held at Purdue University from June 23th through June 30th, 2024. No prior knowledge of crystallography is expected from attendees. However, a good understanding of undergraduate level chemistry, physics and mathematics is desirable. While the course is geared towards graduate level attendees, applications from strong undergraduate students will be considered. Past course attendees have included faculty members and industrial researchers. Learn more about this opportunity here.
