Last Saturday the historic National Academy of Sciences building on Constitution Avenue opened its doors for visitors to explore the wonders of our planet and become “Earth Day Heroes.” Through interactive exhibits and activities, including a scavenger hunt, arts and crafts, and hands-on science, children and adults alike spent the day expanding their appreciation for Earth and nature, discovering the importance of their individual impact and decisions, and learning about science.
“Our current environmental and climate challenges require urgent action on behalf of the next generation,” said Elizabeth Eide, director of the National Academies’ Division on Earth and Life Studies. “Engaging with these young people about science is a meaningful reminder of what is at stake, as well as energizing for all of the new ideas that the next generation of scientists will bring to tackle these challenges.”
The Earth Day Heroes event brought exhibitors from around the D.C. area to join in sharing their passion and expertise. Exhibitors included D.C. Department of Energy and the Environment, Smithsonian Gardens, U.S. Geological Survey, NOAA Marine Debris Program, Glen Echo Park Aquarium, Smithsonian National Zoo Conservation Biology Institute, Reptile Wonders, and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
