Despite increased attention to health equity in recent years, disparities in health outcomes and access to care persist in brain disorders. Recognizing the consistent, multilayered effort required within the entire neuroscience community to reduce such disparities, the National Academies' Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders hosted a two-hour public workshop exploring potential strategies to mitigate health disparities starting with basic science. This event brought together a diverse panel of academic researchers, funders, journal editors, and patients to discuss opportunities to increase the generalizability of data, address biases, and cultivate interdisciplinary collaborations to further health equity.

Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and conduct a two-hour public workshop. The workshop discussion will convene neuroscientists to explore opportunities to mitigate health disparities in brain disorders through basic science methodologies and research approaches.
Invited presentations and discussions may:
- Explore key issues in health disparities for central nervous system disorders and opportunities for contributors within the neuroscience community (e.g., researchers, journal editors, and funders) to address them.
- Reflect on potential areas of implicit bias (e.g., in research questions, methodologies, and neurotechnology) and strategies to reduce their impact.
- Discuss the scientific importance of and barriers to utilizing biological material from populations that have been historically underrepresented in neuroscience research.
- Consider approaches and the scientific value to engaging people with lived experience (e.g., people with brain disorders and caregivers) throughout the research process.
A planning committee will develop the agenda for the workshop, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. A proceedings in brief of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
