Subcommittee on U.S.-China Scientific Engagement

In progress

The Subcommittee on US-China Scientific Engagement explores approaches for moving forward in areas of joint work with counterparts in China. The subcommittee consists of key leadership from the current PGA Committee as well as additional experts with experience in US-China science cooperation. It will focus on topics that address (1) globally important issues where scientific cooperation will be critical to advising policy action and (2) issues that have the potential to impact the conduct and use of science, where government-to-government interactions are difficult. The subcommittee will work with other divisions to develop a catalogue of ongoing or potential activities.

Description

The NASEM will appoint a Subcommittee on U.S.-China Scientific Engagement under the Policy and Global Affairs Division Committee to explore approaches for moving forward in specific areas of joint work with counterparts in China, primarily through the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The subcommittee will consist of key leadership from the current PGA Committee as well as additional experts with knowledge and experience related to U.S.-China science cooperation. It will focus on topics that address (1) globally important issues where scientific cooperation will be critical to advising policy action (e.g., public health, climate change, sustainability), and (2) issues that have the potential to impact the conduct and use of science, where government-to-government interactions are difficult (e.g., ethics and emerging technologies, conduct and culture of science in the two countries). The subcommittee will work with leadership in other divisions and in the Academies to develop a catalogue of ongoing or potential activities.
