Gulf Research Program Science Policy Fellowships

The Gulf Research Program’s Science Policy Fellowship helps scientists hone their skills by putting them to practice for the benefit of Gulf Coast communities and ecosystems. Fellows gain first-hand experience as they spend one year on the staff of federal, state, local, or non-governmental agencies in the Gulf region to apply scientific knowledge to policy.

GRP Welcomes 12 New Science Policy Fellows to 2025 Cohort

News Release

— The Gulf Research Program (GRP) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine announced today its 2025 cohort of Science Policy Fellows. Beginning Sept. 1, 2025, the 12 new fellows will spend one year on the staff of federal and state government agencies, public health departments, and nonprofit organizations across the Gulf Coast region.

Fellow Spotlight: Engineering Success with the GRP’s Science Policy Fellowship

Program News

The Gulf Research Program spoke to 2023 Science Policy Fellow Gillian Palino following her year at the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (TBRPC) host office. Upon completing her fellowship, Palino returned to the University of Tennessee, where she is finishing her Ph.D. She will join Mississippi State University as an assistant professor in fall 2025.

As part of her Ph.D. project, Palino modeled, designed, and constructed a Regenerative Stormwater Conveyance, a type of emerging green infrastructure, for a local park experiencing erosion. The Science Policy Fellowship connected her expertise in stormwater management with the opportunity to apply that expertise to policy at TBRPC.
