Frontiers Planet Prize to Accelerate Scientific Solutions for Healthy Lives on a Healthy Planet

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine serve as the U.S. National Representative Body for the Frontiers Planet Prize. The 5th edition of the Prize is now open. U.S. universities and research institutions that have not yet participated are invited to register as National Nominating Bodies by September 15, 2026 to nominate eligible research by October 30, 2026.

Key dates

  • March – Sept. 2026 — Institutional Registration
    • Already-registered U.S. Universities & Research Institutions (National Nominating Bodies, “NNBs”):
      • No re-registration needed.
      • To update your NNB point of contact or to access resources, including application forms for the upcoming nominations, email info@frontiersplanetprize.org.
    • New Institutions: U.S. Universities and research institutions who have not yet participated in the Frontiers Planet Prize to register as NNBs.
    • Scientists: Not sure if your institution is registered? Check the current Nomination Partners list or email info@frontiersplanetprize.org.
  • Oct. 1 to 30, 2026 — National Submission Deadline (U.S.)
    • Each U.S. NNB may submit up to three nomination packets to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) which is serving as the U.S. National Representative Body.
    • Each nomination packet must include:
    • Submit nominations to NAS via email to: sustainability@nas.edu
    • Deadline: October 30, 2026 (5:00 pm EDT).
  • Nov. 1 – Dec. 1, 2026 — National Review (NAS)
    • NAS reviews submissions and selects three U.S. National Nominees to advance to international evaluation by the Jury of 100.
  • Dec. 2, 2026 – Feb. 2027 — International Review (Jury of 100)
  • April 22, 2027 (Earth Day) — National Champions Announced
  • Summer 2027 — Global Award Ceremony
    • International Champions announced. Each receives USD $1,000,000 to scale their research.

Award details

The Frontiers Planet Prize (FPP) is a global competition that recognizes transformational science addressing planetary crises. Each year, three International Champions each receive USD $1,000,000 to amplify their research.
