Student ratings have long been used by many institutions of higher education as a primary form of summative evaluation of teaching. In recent years, studies have brought into question the validity of student ratings, highlighting the need for more effective evaluation methods that recognize and reward evidence-based teaching practices.
To begin framing the national conversation around the reform of teaching evaluation, in this workshop, participants discuss issues around recognizing and evaluating science teaching in higher education. Participants include experts in the fields of teaching and learning, as well as faculty from a range of institutions, engaged in evaluation reform.

Description
A planning committee will organize a 2 day public workshop to consider ways of recognizing and evaluating teaching in higher education. The workshop will highlight examples of the approaches being used in efforts to more effectively evaluate faculty members’ teaching. The focus will be on approaches that aim to improve the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning through the use of evidence-based pedagogy. Several case studies that incorporate multiple sources of information to evaluate teaching will be presented. Participants will discuss the benefits and limitations of the various approaches (e.g., rubrics, frameworks) institutions are using to more effectively review, document, and evaluate teaching and recognize faculty work that focuses on improving instruction (within classroom and/or curriculum levels). Participants will also discuss the frequency of shared goals across these efforts and the common barriers among the examples. A proceedings in brief will be authored by a designated rapporteur.
