A committee of international experts will plan and conduct a public workshop on the process of rapid aging in the Latin American and Caribbean region (LAC). The workshop topics will consider scientific research emphasizing what is unique about aging in LAC and what is similar to other processes around the world, and will review a data collection strategy that is cognizant of the uniqueness of the LAC aging process while being responsive to the needs of the research community for harmonized, highly comparable information.

Description
The National Research Council will appoint a steering committee of international experts to plan and conduct a public workshop on the process of rapid aging in the Latin American and Caribbean region (LAC). The workshop topics will feature presentations and discussions on the main areas where knowledge is insufficient and new research is required, to consider scientific research emphasizing what is unique about aging in LAC and what is similar to other processes around the world, and to review a data collection strategy that is cognizant of the uniqueness of the LAC aging process while being responsive to the needs of the research community for harmonized, highly comparable information. The workshop participants will be selected and invited by the steering committee in cooperation with international non-governmental organizations and national academies of science in various Latin American countries. The workshop will be held in a country in Latin America. A workshop summary report prepared by a rapporteur will be published by National Academy Press.
