Future of Battery Technology Options for Defense Applications

In formation

Battery energy storage can provide a variety of benefits for defense applications, including operational reliability, reduced risk, and energy security. This National Academies committee will identify existing and emergent battery energy storage technology opportunities and their capabilities for military and defense applications. The committee will explore strengths and weaknesses of battery technologies for defense applications across technology and manufacturing readiness levels. They will identify technology gaps where research could improve battery capabilities, and opportunities to leverage commercially available technologies. This report will make recommendations and highlight pathways to strengthen U.S. battery research, development, and manufacturing.

Description

A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine-appointed ad hoc committee will explore current and potential next-generation battery energy storage technologies for defense applications. In so doing, the committee will:
- Identify existing and upcoming battery energy storage technology opportunities and their capabilities for the U.S. and allied government military applications.
- Explore the strengths and weaknesses of future battery technologies for defense applications. This may include an examination of performance, safety, and manufacturability across technology and manufacturing readiness levels.
- Identify technology gaps where research investments could improve battery capabilities across technology and manufacturing readiness levels, and opportunities to leverage commercially available technologies.
This report will issue findings, recommendations, and conclusions on these topics and highlight pathways to strengthen U.S. battery research, development, and manufacturing.
