Standing Committee on the Future of Large-scale Experimental Characterization Capabilities for the Basic Energy Sciences User Facilities
Meeting the future demands of the scientific community and addressing national priorities requires continued investment in R&D capabilities and a forward-looking approach to emerging infrastructure needs. Through a series of workshops and webinars, this standing committee will facilitate input from across the scientific and engineering communities to help inform the Department of Energy Office of Basic Energy Sciences' strategic planning for future large-scale experimental capabilities.

Statement of Task
A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine-appointed ad hoc committee will organize a series of workshops and other community engaging events to explore future (1) science drivers, (2) large-scale experimental capabilities, and (3) potential options for expanding available scientific infrastructure, with the goal of informing the U.S. Department of Energy’s Basic Energy Sciences user facilities mission beyond 2035.
Specifically, the committee will:
• Organize up to six workshops and associated webinars to explore future scientific questions relevant to the BES mission, including (1) cutting-edge and cross-cutting scientific research directions, (2) potential infrastructure limitations that could impede research on these questions, and (3) opportunities for DOE to reduce research barriers in the future.
• Organize a capstone workshop to share and discuss a set of high-level takeaways from the workshop series and explore the future of experimental capabilities and potential options for expanding available infrastructure that would be necessary to address these science drivers.
• Disseminate takeaways from the workshops to spread awareness of the critical science drivers, options for possible investment, and potential opportunities and considerations for DOE.
Exploration workshops will be summarized in Proceedings-in-Brief reports, while the capstone will be summarized with a Workshop Proceedings report.
