The Committee to Reassess the Department of Veterans Affairs Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry will hold its third meeting on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.

Part of the committee’s Statement of Task specifies that the committee examine other means or methods to obtain similar or better information than the Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry provides for use in burn pits exposures research. One of those methods is the joint Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs Individual Longitudinal Exposure Record (ILER). As part of this meeting, the committee will be holding an information-gathering session on ILER, which will be available for public observation below.

This session will be held virtually from 1:20PM–2:40PM ET.

No registration is necessary to watch.

This session will feature a question and answer session between committee members and ILER represenatives as well as a committee-directed demonstration of ILER.

In preparation for this open session, the committee will review a previously recorded presentation describing ILER given by Dr. Shuping, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Vandergrift on 9/24/20. The video of the presentation is available here. Accompanying slides available here.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee to Reassess the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit (AH&OBP) Registry will host a public presentation and discussion associated with the release of its consensus report. We invite you to join this public briefing, which will be held virtually on Friday, October 14, 2022 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm ET.

This report is a congressionally directed follow-up of the initial assessment of the AH&OBP Registry conducted by NASEM in 2017. The Committee assessed the registry’s performance over its 7-year duration based on its purposes as specified by Congressional law and the VA, and, as requested in its Statement of Task, considered potential alternative sources to address airborne hazards exposures and health effects.

Committee chair Dr. David Savitz (Brown University) will be joined by Committee member Dr. Kristen Olson (University of Nebraska- Lincoln) to discuss the Committee’s findings, conclusions, and recommendations on the AH&OBP Registry.
