The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine Report, Premium Cigars: Patterns of Use, Marketing, & Health Effects Report Release, will be released Thursday, March 10 at 11:00 am ET.

The Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health commissioned the National Academies to convene a committee to examine premium cigar characteristics, health effects, and marketing and perceptions, and make prioritized recommendations for future federally funded research on premium cigars.

The early to mid-1990s saw a large surge in U.S. cigar consumption: 5 billion cigars in 1997. Premium cigar consumption increased approximately 250 percent from 1993 to 1997 and 90 percent from 1996 to 1997. Recent data suggests that premium cigar use may be increasing, given that the United States imported more than 171 million premium cigars from January to May 2021---a 73 percent increase from the same months in 2020. Premium cigars, however, make up a small percent of the total U.S. cigar market. Premium cigars have also been the subject of legal and regulatory efforts for the past decade.

Members of the committee who wrote the report, Premium Cigars: Patterns of Use, Marketing, and Health Effects, will provide an overview of key findings, conclusions, and recommendations, followed by a moderated question and answer period. Committee members participating in this event include:

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee on Health Effects and Patterns of Use of Premium Cigars held a mix of open and closed sessions on April 20 and 23, 2021.

On April 20, the committee met in open session at 1:00 - 2:15 pm EDT to receive public input on the draft research questions provided to the committee by the report sponsors (the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health). This was followed by a closed session at 2:30 – 4:00 pm EDT.

On April 23, the committee held an open session only at 1:00 – 4:30 pm EDT. There was no closed session.
