Join us on February 8, 2024, as the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement hosts a one-hour webinar featuring Civic Health Alliance, Healthy Democracy Healthy People, and Vot-ER, who are coming together to partner on a strategic initiative to engage organizations, people, and communities in a coordinated effort to increase voter participation. Featured speakers will include roundtable member Sheri Johnson of University of Wisconsin - Madison and the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps and the American Public Health Association's Georges Benjamin.

Our health and the health of our democracy are deeply connected. Inclusive, robust democratic processes are vital to creating the opportunity for everyone to be healthy. However, opportunities to participate in our democracy are not equally accessible for everyone. Archon Fung, professor of citizenship and self-government at the Harvard Kennedy School will share the historical and political context for American democracy and voting policy and reflect on implications for efforts to improve health and health equity. Miles Rapoport of 100percentDemocracy.org and a longtime organizer and elected official will offer an international perspective and present alternatives to the U.S. status quo such as universal voting—and will discuss with the panel relevance to efforts to improve health and health equity. The webinar will be moderated by Jeanne Ayers, executive director of Healthy Democracy Healthy People and a former state public health official.

This session will focus on effective ways public health agencies and leaders are promoting a healthier inclusive democracy. It will feature presentations from Carter Blakey, Deputy Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, who will discuss the impact of adding Voter Participation as a core objective in Healthy People 2030 and Elizabeth Blomberg, Research & Analytics Scientist, County Health Rankings and Roadmaps (CHRR), who will provide an overview of the 2023 CHRR National Findings Report focused on civic health. Practical examples from state and local health departments implementing strategies to promote inclusive civic and voter participation will also be shared. In addition, Paula Tran, Wisconsin State Health Officer, and local health officials will share ways the department is strengthening civic participation and incorporating voter participation into their health assessments and planning processes.

Voting and Health: Sharing Actions for A Healthy Democracy

This webinar will orient professionals on voter registration as a legal, ethical, and effective intervention in healthcare and public health. Nonpartisan, research based, and clinically appropriate civic engagement tools will be provided to participants. These tools are easily integrated into daily workflows and examples of how healthcare institutions are using them will be provided.

About the co-hosts:

Healthy Democracy Healthy People (HDHP) is a non-partisan coalition with the overall aim of advancing health and racial equity by strengthening civic and voter participation and ensuring access to the ballot for all eligible voters. The HDHP approach is centered on three practices shown to build power including: organize people and organizations, organize narrative and data, and organize policy and resources.

Vot-ER is a nonprofit nonpartisan organization with a vision for healthy communities powered by a healthy democracy. Its mission is to expand the electorate through better civic engagement in the healthcare sector. Vot-ER currently has programs in over 500 hospitals and clinics and helped more than 47,000 Americans to vote.

The American Public Health Association champions the health of all people and all communities. We are the only organization that combines a 150-year perspective, a broad-based member community and the ability to influence policy to improve the public's health.
