Accessible, affordable housing can be a platform for enabling community living, maximizing independence, and promoting positive health outcomes for vulnerable populations. Description
An ad hoc committee will plan, organize, and implement a 1-day public workshop to explore the role of housing as a social determinant of health for older adults and people with disabilities, particularly among people of color and low income groups. Accessible, affordable housing can be a platform for enabling community living, maximizing independence, and promoting positive health outcomes for vulnerable populations. The affordability and availability of this housing, however, is often a major barrier.
The role of housing as a social determinant of health is underinvestigated. The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions focused on topics surrounding the affordability, availability, and importance of supportive housing for these populations, including housing supply, supportive housing needs, differences between rural and urban settings, social isolation, subsidies, and opportunities for policy changes.
The committee will plan and organize the workshop, develop the agenda for the workshop, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate or identify moderators for the discussions. A single summary of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
