The National Academies Committee on the Current State of Research, Development, and Stockpiling of Smallpox Medical Countermeasures will host a virtual public information-gathering session in conjunction with the second meeting on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.

Discussions will explore lessons learned from the recent COVID-19 pandemic and mpox multi-country outbreak to inform an evaluation of the current state of research, development, and stockpiling of smallpox readiness and response measures. Using this public information-gathering session and a comprehensive review of existing literature, analyses, and other expert and public input, the committee will develop a report with its findings and conclusions on priorities for additional research or activities to improve readiness and response measures against smallpox and on the composition of the U.S. Strategic National Stockpile to ensure appropriate smallpox medical countermeasure response options.
